Medical Cannabis | RIP Hannah Deacon - Weed Supermarket UK

Hannah Deacon, a devoted mother and pioneering medical cannabis campaigner, passed away on 6 May 2025 at the age of 45, following a short and brutal illness. Her relentless advocacy not only transformed her son Alfie’s life but also led to significant changes in UK law regarding cannabis.

A Mother’s Determination

Hannah’s journey into activism began with her son Alfie Dingley, who was diagnosed with a rare and severe form of epilepsy known as PCDH19. Traditional treatments proved ineffective, prompting Hannah and her partner Drew to seek alternatives. In 2017, they moved to the Netherlands, where Alfie received cannabis-based medication that drastically reduced his seizures. However, this treatment was illegal in the UK at the time.

Medical Cannabis – Changing the Law

Determined to bring about change, Hannah launched a public campaign to legalize medical cannabis in the UK. Her efforts culminated in a petition with 370,000 signatures and garnered support from high-profile figures, including actor Sir Patrick Stewart. In November 2018, the UK government legalized the prescription of cannabis-based medicines, a milestone largely attributed to Hannah’s unwavering dedication.

Ongoing Advocacy

Beyond securing treatment for her son, Hannah remained committed to broader advocacy. She co-founded the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society, the Medcan Family Foundation, and Maple Tree Consultants, all aimed at improving access to medical cannabis and educating healthcare professionals. Her work has positively impacted over 75,000 people in the UK.

A Lasting Legacy

Hannah’s passing is a profound loss to her family—partner Drew, and children Alfie and Annie—and to the countless individuals she inspired. Her legacy endures through the lives she touched and the legal reforms she championed. As the cannabis community continues to advocate for patient access and education, Hannah’s contributions remain a guiding light.
